After the Great Catastrophe, many cities disappeared. Those that survived were ravaged by warlords in their conquests for land and power. Of the many great cities in Engel, only four remain, existing as independent city states.

Wisp's remote location probably accounts for most of its prosperity during the years of chaos. Few warmongers have bothered to march out to its walls. The city is host to the Guild of Engineers, and is considered the center of invention on Engel.

Tristen was once known as the City of Elves. Today few elves live in the largest city on Engel, nestled in the woods of the western continental divide. The city is a hub for commerce along its established river and land travel routes. The Thieves' Guild has set up headquarters in the warehouse district.

A port city renowned for its lawfulness, Ilmari is the home of the Warriors' Guild. The guild serves as a police force for the eastern divide, but holds little influence outside of the city limits.

Unschuld is a city shrouded in secrecy. Ever since The Rein has claimed it as their headquarters, the city has been under marshall law. Little is known about the city, and its gates are closed to everyone on either side of its walls.

Most of Engel is fought over by feudal lords seeking to rule the countryside. Some lords fight to restore order, others fight for personal gain. Many peasants have flocked to their keeps for protection during the warfare and turmoil. After years of fighting, eight keeps remain in the struggle for control of Engel. Below are a few of the major contenders.

Lady Illana's keep is located on the northern edge of the western divide. Her holdings are small compared to some of the other lords, but she has managed to avoid major conflict for years.

Located on the shore south of Unschuld, Lord Sebastian's keep is feared by most people. He has become by far the most powerful of the lords since his alliance with The Rein.

Nestled at the eastern base of the pass through the divide, Lord Matthias's keep is the most strategically important stronghold. Whoever controls it can expand on both sides of the divide.

Lord Brightblade rules over the southernmost island on Engel and is the protector of the hamlet, Pagan. He has sworn to oppose The Rein and is in constant conflict with Lord Sebastian.

A few small settlements survive in the dangerous countryside. They lack the size and resources found in the major cities of Engel, but can still provide simple services to the passing adventurer. Listed below are a few of the hamlets.

Willowbrook provides the ferry between Wisp and Lady Illana's keep. The quaint village hosts a large inn and a modest market for the traveler.

Hafen is a small port on the northern coast of the western divide. It provides ferry service to Lord Maenig's keep. It has an inn, able trainers, and small commerce.

A small village on the most southeastern edge of Engel, Trost has been all but forgotten in the recent conflict. There are ample accomodations for the weary traveler.

Nanten is an oasis in the desert near the northeastern coast. The land lacks any value worth fighting over and the village has prospered in peace. Other than the inn and a few shops, there is little to offer.
